The S4 Group, Inc.
- Version 3 SNMP OPC Gateway - March 14, 2003 Testing Status
This is issue #4
of our SNMP OPC Gateway testing status reports. As The S4 Group, Inc. reaches significant milestones in our testing
process we will be sending out additional updates. Along the way if you have specific
questions or issues please do not hesitate to contact us.
-
During the 2 weeks we received multiple incremental
builds of the SNMP-OPC Server software. All the functionality is now in the
product and we are focusing on the final cleanup activities before announcing
availability.
-
One of the major pushes was to release a service pack for
the SNMP OPC Gateway 2.0 product, then incorporate and test the same changes
into to SNMP-OPC Server 3.0 release. If you are currently running or
evaluating the 2.0 product and see any of the following symptoms you should
either
download and install Service Pack 1 or preferably move to the 3.0 release:
- Under certain circumstances the HMI clients may take a while
after they get the initial values of the OPC Items
Background: When you, for example, connect Iconics it may take a while until
it is able to display the values of the OPC Items. There seems to be a delay
of about 2 seconds.
Reason: A refresh command issued by the HMI (Iconics) can be processed "too
late" by the Server and therefore timeout.
- Initial notification does not happen suddenly.
Background: An OPC Server is required to send a initial notification to send
the current values of the OPC Items to the OPC Client. In some cases this
notification may occurs later than expected (about 2-6 minutes too late).
Reason: This is closely related to the above problem with Refresh and only
occurs with OPC Clients using the OPC v2.01 interfaces.
-
Another issue that appears to be a problem in both the
SNMP OPC Gateway and in Iconics Genesis32 HMI package has been resolved and
tested with the SNMP-OPC Server 3.0. If you see these symptoms when using the
SNMP OPC Gateway 2.0 Server move to the SNMP-OPC Server 3.0
- When you load a "Popup Window" under
Iconics Genesis32 that contains process points that were also used on the
parent graphic they sometimes will show up as "Point not Defined" errors on
the Popup Window even when they were just properly displayed on the parent
graphic. This problem was tested with the SNMP OPC Gateway 3.0 and does not
occur there. We are still working with Iconics to try to present a better
error message when this condition occurs.
-
If you have developed your own Device Profiles and would
like us to verify that they load properly with the 3.0 Server please export
them using your 2.0 server and send the exported file as well as any MIBs you
used to build the Device Profile and we will do as much testing as we can
without having your physical hardware available without charge. We would be
happy to do more extensive testing and verification under a consulting
agreement if you, or your product vendor, can also make the hardware platform
available.
We will be making a library of customer and S4-Group
developed Device Profiles available for download from our web site. Please let
me know if you would like to contribute anything to this library.
-
All of the updates that we have received from Obermeier
Software have been sent to us via eMail. This validates the concept that the
software will be small enough for the delivery method to be a download from
The S4 Group web site. When we announce product availability we will publish a
link on this site where you will be able to download and install the software.
Just as in previous releases the installation package includes a very thorough
set of help files.
-
We anticipate announcing availability of the SNMP-OPC Server 3.0 within a few days. The last few issues that we reported to
Obermeier Software were in isolated areas and are things that could be
considered relatively minor. If any of you anticipate needing consulting
services for installation or testing please let us know now so we can get the
work on our schedule.
Both Obermeier Software and The S4 Group are working very
diligently to make sure that when you see the products for the first time
you’ll be able to see the quality and workmanship that went into the
development and testing and will be able to immediately benefit from including
them in your applications. If you missed the previous issues these newsletters are all
posted on The S4 Group, Inc. web site at
http://www.thes4group.com.
You may unsubscribe at any time using the link attached to
this message. If you know of anyone else who would benefit from these status
updates please have them eMail
sejones@thes4group.com and we would be happy to include them in these
updates and in our newsletters.
Sincerely,
Steve
